Farming in the Burren

The Burren has been used by farmers for century's. Unique farming methods keep the farmers happy and the flora blooming.

Farming methods such as the custom of using the mountains as' winterage' where, the cows go up on the mountains in the winter between October and April and they eat away the rough grass and the scrub and prevent overgrowth.

The cows come down in the spring to calf, leaving plenty of space for the flora.


Farming in the Burren dates back to the Neolithic times. Farming in the Burren is very important, without it the Burren would become overgrown and the flora and fauna that make the Burren so unique would become extinct.
